The Sunga Dynasty
The post-Mauryan period from 185 BC to AD 300 saw the emergence of a number of kingdoms all over the Indian subcontinent. Some of these states were small, while others like that of the Kushans were large. This period witnessed a spurt in migrations into India, rise in foreign trade, and development of art. In short, the time scale between 1st century BC and 3rd century AD was a period of flux. Sunga Dynasty (185-73 BC):
The Sunga dynasty was established in 185 BC, about 50 years after Ashoka's death, when the king Brhadrata, the last of the Mauryan rulers, was asassinated by the then commander-in-chief of the Mauryan armed forces, Pusyamitra Sunga, while he was taking the Gaurd of Honour of his forces. Pusyamitra Sunga then ascended the throne.
